Lakewood Community Information

Lakewood is known as the "instant city" because during the 50's it was mostly lima bean fields, then by the 60's it was a well developed city. Attorney John S. Todd played a big part in making Lakewood a city and came up with a way for cities to govern themselves. In 1953 Harold Butler founded Danny’s Donuts, which was renamed to Denny's Restaurant in 1959. That makes Lakewood the home of the first Denny's Restaurant. The last population count taken in Lakewood was in 2000, totaling 79,345. Lakewood is served by four school districts; Long Beach Unified School District, Paramount Unified School District, Bellflower School District, and ABC Unified School District.
