Malibu reached its city status in 1991 to get some growth control in the area. Given Malibu's location, it is surrounded by dry brush and steep clay slopes that make it susceptible to fires, floods, and mudslides. Malibu has been used as a location for countless films and television programs. Malibu is home to Pepperdine University and Malibu High School.
