Manhattan Beach Community Information

In 1901, Stewart Merrill bought the south portion and called his section Manhattan after his old home, New York City. The first downtown building was built by Merrill around 1901, a small frame building later used for city offices. Manhattan Beach was incorporated as a city in 1912. After World War II a large influx of people came as a result of the desirability of the area for year-round living. Manhattan Beach is a city located in the southwestern part of Los Angeles County, just south of El Segundo. Manhattan Beach is another area that is home to many celebrities and many television shows and movies are filmed there. The population of Manhattan Beach at last count was 33,852 according to the census bureau. The city's educational system is part of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.
