Santa Monica Community Information

The first lots were sold in Santa Monica on July 15, 1875. Eleven years later the city of Santa Monica was incorporated. Santa Monica is a beautiful city located right next to the ocean, and it is the beginning of the 10 freeway. Some have called this freeway the busiest in all of North America. Santa Monica is home to many landmarks and beachfront activities. One of these landmarks which sits on the Santa Monica Pier is the Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome, which is a giant carousel. The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium played host to the Academy Awards through out the 1960's. Santa Monica also has a large outdoor mall called the Third Street Promenade, which stretches three city blocks. At last count the city of Santa Monica had a population of 96,500. A large concentration of British and Irish expatriates has moved to Santa Monica. The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District serves the area of Santa Monica schools.
