In 1964, the community incorporated as the City of Thousand Oaks, honoring the majestic, abundant oak trees in the area. Thousand Oaks is conveniently located approximately halfway between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles on the US 101 Freeway. The city forms the most populated part of a regional area called the Conejo Valley. The City of Thousand Oaks along with Newbury Park was part of a master planned city, created by the Janss Corporation. The last counted population of Thousand Oaks was 117,005 people in the year 2000. Thousand Oaks has the 11th highest per capita income in the nation. The city's economy is based on a small range of businesses, with biotechnology, healthcare, electronics, aerospace, automotive, and telecommunications. A lot of jobs also come from the Thousand Oaks Mall which is located near route 23.
